During conventional training your brain sends electrical impulses to your muscles to tell them to contract. 

EMS training works by sending external impulses to the body that mimic the pulses sent by your brain. Your body does not recognize the difference between internal and external impulses and the end result is a more intense muscle contraction. Each muscle contracts 85 times per second! compared to 1-2 contractions per second in one muscle group at a time during conventional training.
